Phantom IRIS RACE Windfoil



Phantom International is proud to launch its FOILS LINE with a first release: the Iris R Windfoil.

After launching its Windsurfing sails and boards line earlier this year, it was a natural path to start working on windfoils. The Iris R Windfoil has been developed by Alex Udin, designed by Gonzalo Redondo D3 Applied Technologies, structured by Ellis Engineered, and tested by Benjamin Tillier. It features the unique M40J high modulus carbon prepreg, and guarantees unreached performances. 


High modulus or not high modulus?


Other major brands are announcing the use of high modulus prepreg carbon while in fact they are using “high strength carbon fiber” T700. The Iris R will be the only windfoil on the market using M40J prepreg carbon which is the highest modulus Tensile to be featured in a windsurfing foil today.

Windfoiling components, especially masts, are made using various grades of carbon fibers characterized mainly by their tensile strength and tensile modulus. Tensile strength is the amount of force needed to cause the fibers to break, while the tensile modulus is a measure of the carbon fiber's stiffness.

The cost of the materials goes up with the increase in tensile strength, or increase in tensile modulus.

The chart below, drawn by Toray Industrial, illustrates some basic characteristics of the Toray range of carbon fiber prepreg, and illustrates why using multiple layers of various modulus carbon fiber is the only way to make high performance, safe and durable parts.

Developed by Alex Udin


Phantom International Founder Alex Udin started making sails at the age of 16. With a passion for sailing and windsurfing, he started working in R&D lofts in Maui back in 2001 and founded his sailmaking company in 2003, designing high performance sails for famous boatyards and professional sailors like Franck Cammas and François Gabart.


“Our main goal was to design the finest racing windfoil on the market with the help of our fluid dynamics and structure analysis experts from the America's Cup.

We have been working for several years in close collaboration with Gonzalo Redondo (D3 Applied Technologies) and Brett Ellis, both from the AC community (American Magic team, and Artemis).

The Ultimate Racing Windfoil is the result of many hours of testing and performance data collection, including GPS, cameras and gyros (speed, VMG, healing angle, pitching angle, leeway…).

These datas allowed us to have precise inputs to run some very accurate CFD (Computerised Fluid Dynamics) and (Finite Element Analysis) simulations in real conditions with professional windsurfer Benjamin Tillier.

CFD and FEA are powerful tools previously and exclusively used for the design of racing yachts such as the America’s Cup or Formula 1.

Through these simulations, we optimized and refined the shape and structure of the foil in every details, and reached significant improvements in the efficiency and performance”.

Designed by D3 Applied Technologies


D3 Applied Technologies was founded in 2012 by Gonzalo Redondo. Amongst other projects, Gonzalo has previously worked as a design engineer and CFD analyst for Groupama Sailing Team (Winner of the VOR 2011-2012), Puma Ocean Racing VOR70, Telefonica VOR70, and Artemis Racing Team, Challenger of the Record for the 34th America's Cup.


With know-how acquired as members of America's Cup and Volvo Ocean Race design teams, they have developed state-of-the-art design technologies that improve product performance. D3 Applied Technologies include a group of scientists, engineers and external collaborators with proven experience in their field of expertise.



Structural Layup by Ellis Engineered


Ellis Engineered was established in 2012 by Brett Ellis, an expert in the engineering of composite structures for the MarineAutomotive and Civil/Architectural markets.

Brett has been a key team member in four America’s Cup campaigns. The first two campaigns with the powerful Swiss Team Alinghi, then Luna Rossa Challenge and finally Artemis Racing for the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda.

Ellis Engineered was created to offer professional services in 3D modelingstructural analysis and optimization, ensuring our clients see the full potential and benefits of these advanced lightweight composite structures.

Ellis Engineered has a proven track record of providing professional design and engineering services for racing boatsproduction boatsrace cars and architectural structures.





Tested & Approved by Benjamin Tillier


Benjamin has a RS:X Olympic windsurfing background and was one the windfoiling pioneers. His expertise and passion has overwhelmed us since the day we met him.


Benjamin Tillier is based in Noumea, New Caledonia and is a reference everywhere in the world for his unique style.  We are very proud of what we have achieved with him and look forward to seeing Benjamin leading the PWA windfoiling ranking.
